DIARY OF EVENTS
MARCH
ST DAVID'S DAY
1 March 2007
Happy St David's Day!
Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus!
If you happen to be in Wales on March
1st, you would more than likely find the country in festive mood as people
its length and depth hold celebrations to mark St David's Day.
Typically people wear yellow
daffodils on their lapels or prepare traditional Welsh meals such as cawl or
leek broth to mark this day, which commemorates the death of the patron saint
of Wales.
Born in the sixth century, Sant Dewi,
as he is also known, was a Celtic monk who was eventually made Archbishop of
Wales and canonised some 400 years later.
He grew up near Capel Non (Non's
chapel) on the south-west Wales
coast near the present city of Saint
David.
Little has been discovered about his
early life, but what is known is that he was educated in a monastery called
Hen Fynyw under the tutelage of a blind monk called Paulinus. He was said to
have stayed there for some years before departing with a band of followers on
missionary work.
He was also said to have been
descended from royalty. His mother, Non, was the
daughter of a local chieftain and legend has it that Non was also a niece of
the legendary Welsh king, Arthur. His father, Sant, was the son of Ceredig,
who was prince of Ceredigion, a region in South-West Wales.
Dewi travelled far throughout Wales, where
he set up several churches. He founded a monastery at Glyn Rhosyn (Rose Vale)
on the banks of the small River Alun where the cathedral city of St. David stands today.
The monastery he established was very strict, and the brothers had to work
exceptionally hard besides undertaking their usual routine of prayer and
celebrating mass.
Perhaps one of the most well-known
stories regarding St David's life is said to have taken place at the synod of
Llanddewi Brefi. They were to decide who was to be the next archbishop of Wales. A
great crowd had gathered, and when Dewi stood up to speak, one of the congregation shouted out that no-one would be able to see
or hear him. And at that moment, a miracle occurred. The ground rose until all assembled could
see and hear the great saint. After this sign from the heavens, it was
decided, that he should indeed be appointed archbishop.
Chroniclers say Dewi lived for over
100 years, and it is generally held that he died in 589.
His last words in a sermon were said
to be: "Be joyful, and keep your faith and your creed. Do the little
things that you have seen me do and heard about. I will walk the path that
our fathers have trod before us." "Do the little things" is
today a very well-known phrase in Welsh (Gwnewch y pethau bychain), and has
proven, time and again, to be inspirational to many.
